Welcome to the 2007-8 Region X website!

Region X is on top of the North American list for membership this year.  That’s great!  We were passed only by the Region At Large, which is a new region and any growth at all is a great percentage growth.  Good job, Jack.

The CRC is right around the corner.  You delegates and alternates should be getting your reports in order.  We will be presenting only the high points of the reports, which will be done electronically again.  Everyone was pleased with the format last year, so we’ll go for it again this year.  Only thing is, I plead with you to pick out only the highlights – like the one best thing that happened in each of the 4 main areas (membership, programs, RP fund raising, and student activities).  If you resolved or avoided a disaster and you want to share that, I would agree that should be an interesting item to share.  Remember, we want the business meeting to be interesting to everyone in attendance.  “Reading” reports doesn’t hold interest very long.

There are probably many members who are eligible for advancement.  That should come to the CRC for processing through Society.  Also, there are probably some members in each chapter who could be eligible for Society awards.  Please check all of the requirements and your members’ potential qualification.  Process the ones who qualify and let’s try to bring home some of the cherished Society awards.  Especially, look for potential Fellows within the active members of your chapter.  We haven’t been very successful in that area.  I’d like to challenge you to bring 2 potential candidates from each of your chapters.  There aren’t many selected each year, so we may have to go in 2 or 3 years to see it happen; but let’s keep trying until it happens.  Be sensitive to all of the award categories, including the CTTC project awards.  We haven’t had many of those either, so let’s try to bring home some of those trophies.

Many of you know that a “biggey” for me is RP.  Mike Burgess has been doing a great job with the RP throughout the region.  Let’s get behind him and get him at least 2 names of persons or companies who are potential candidates for the Golden Circle level of contributions ($10,000 or more).  Then, Mike will contact you to help plan the campaign for the “ask” and see what happens.  I KNOW we have some who would love to invest at that level and receive the Society recognition for their confidence and their support of ASHRAE Research.  Ask Mike about it.

Saul has served our region well as the RVC for CTTC.  He’s helping chapters maintain their high standards by selecting top level programs, which attracts more attendees at the meetings.  If you have a need with your programs or need information about the Distinguished Lecturer program and how it works, just call Saul.  He’s getting ready to sail off into the sunset, after serving 3 years in that capacity.  Be assured, though, that we aren’t going to let him get away that easily.  I know there is something else just waiting for him to jump into it.  You know what?  The same can be said for Jack too.  He won’t be able to get far, either.

I just returned from the winter meeting in Chicago.  It was a great meeting, with the best attendance ever.  That was great news, since many similar events are experiencing dropping attendance.  It sounds like the exhibitors had a great time too, with all of the attendees walking up to their booth.  The technical programs were pretty well attended and very well received.  It is admirable that the level of state-of-the-art technical information flowing remains incredibly high.  That is a result of those 99 hard working Technical Committees as they plan their program presentations.

I have included my chapter visit schedule for your information.  Some meetings have not yet been confirmed with the chapter.  It looks like I will make it to all except the Hawaii chapter.  Sorry folks, I’ll do that next year.  This one just got away!  I haven’t included all of the RVC visits, which is my error.  Timing won’t allow me to get their data into the form.  We will have all of those cleaned up in the next issue.  Let me know if you have a question about this schedule.

We are in a great industry and ASHRAE is moving smartly throughout our industry world-wide.  We can be proud to be members of such a Society and be proud of those hard working folks who manage the affairs of the Society.  WE are the grass roots of this Society; however, nothing will happen without a dedicated staff and committed group of lay leaders making certain things stay on track.  You can be a part of that leadership team.  Just let the nominating committee representative know your desires and abilities.

Best wishes to each of you for a great ASHRAE year.  You are the best!
